How To Choose A Nursery Theme

Baby is on the way! There are so many things to do to prepare for welcoming a little one into your home, from baby proofing the house to stocking up on diapers to getting out of the habit of leaving your shoes in the middle of the floor. One of the most special steps in the process of baby-prepping is setting up a nursery. This is where your little one will sleep (hopefully through the night) and grow into a healthy little toddler. It can be overwhelming to decorate a new space, but with a few tips and tricks, we can help you choose a nursery theme that creates a loving environment for bringing up baby.

Assess Your Space & Long-Term Needs

Before you dive into color swatches and weigh the pros and cons of different themes, it’s essential to assess the space you’re working with and identify your long-term goals for it. Take some measurements to understand how big the room or area is and think about how long you want the nursery theme to last. Is this a space you’d prefer not to re-decorate in two or three years? If so, you’ll need to choose a theme that’s suitable for toddlers and possibly a pre-K kiddo as well.

Find a Focus and a Focal Point

Now it’s time to think about the overall aesthetic of the room. Some parents prefer an obvious theme such as woodland, princess, sports, nautical, travel, farmhouse, or even a particular motif - elephants, rainbows, mermaids - to anchor the room. Others prefer to opt for an overall nursery aesthetic such as elegant, minimalist, rustic, boho, or Scandinavian. Decide whether you’d prefer to have an obvious theme or simply create a space based on the feeling you’d like for it to have. A good way to do so is by going on Pinterest and browsing images. Pin up a few for inspiration and then opt for the theme or ambience that speaks most to you.

Next, you’ll want to select one piece of furniture to serve as the focal point for the nursery. This will be the zone that the room is oriented around and where your attention is drawn. Typically, the crib area serves as a focal point, but that’s not necessarily the only option. You can orient the room around a couch, reading nook or even a unique dresser that you’d like to highlight.

Choose Your Color Palette

Selecting your color palette will help you sail into the design process. The theme you select may play a part in your color choice, but it doesn’t have to. It’s easy to build a theme within the details of the room from bedding choices, wall art, and accessories. An excellent strategy for selecting your colors is to follow the 60-30-10 color rule. This indicates that your primary color, which will be used for the walls and potentially in a chair, couch, or rug, dominates about 60 percent of the space. Then, 30 percent of the room such as linens, tables or chairs, will be done in your secondary color. The remaining 10 percent can be decorated in an accent color that surfaces in throw pillows, blankets, art pieces and trinkets. The accent color is often more vibrant and adds some zest to the environment.

Soothing, pastel colors are the ideal option for lulling babies to sleep and generating a calm atmosphere. Here at Livly, we’re suckers for the traditional pastel pinks and baby blues for welcoming little girls and boys. If you’re waiting to find out the sex of the baby, you probably want to choose a neutral color for the walls. Anytime you’re not so sure about color, neutral shades like cream or beige are excellent choices because they turn your room into a convertible canvas. You can still fill the room with color later on in other ways, but by keeping the overall paint job subtle, you grant yourself flexibility moving forward.

During bath time, be sure to clean them gently with a sponge and avoid using scented soaps or shampoos. Simple, clean baby products are best. Remember that a baby’s skin is thinner and more sensitive than yours so extra care and attention will help you protect it.

Select Furniture

After you’ve decided on a theme, color palette, and a focal point, it’s time to choose the rest of the furniture that will go into your nursery. Your theme and colors will serve as guidelines for picking pieces that harmonize. Will white, wood, gray or black look better with the elements you’ve chosen? The easiest way to select your furniture is to choose one color for all of the pieces and stick to it, buying a set from the same place if possible.

Pick Out Linens

Choosing the linens for a room always makes it come to life. Start with the bedding and then coordinate the curtains based on the pattern or color you choose. If you’re following the 60-30-10 rule, this will be that secondary color. Consider an accent rug or larger rug for the floor and a fun throw blanket or two if you have a nursing chair or sitting area.

Have Fun With Details

The details are always the fun part of the process. This is where you can really make your chosen theme come to life and add eclectic splashes of personality. Play with plush animals, throw pillows, and wall art to give the room some vibrancy. You could create a gallery wall in your little one’s room to give it an artsy appeal or add some shelves with playful trinkets. Mirrors, mobiles, lamps, and beanbags are other ways to adorn the environment. Have fun with it and make it yours!

Choosing a nursery theme is a subjective step in the baby preparation process. Remember that there’s no right or wrong way to do it. The important thing is to create a space that is safe and welcoming for your baby when he or she makes a debut on the planet. All of the other details are just cherries on top.
